David, Thanks very much for taking the time to respond to some of my post.
Perhaps my writing appeared distracted (from itself) and rather loosely
pulled together. It was an attempt to articulate some thoughts/ reflections
inspired by thinking about the overlaps between dance and technology ... and
to push some of these a bit further. I was trying to find other
relationships and analogies to use as a sort of groundwork (guess it comes
across more patchwork) for support. I just reread my notes and generally
speaking I was, without mentioning them, basing my reflections on
experiments and practices/ historical trajectories that have gone on in this
century in the arts, for example, tracing and using a connection from
Duchamp, Cage, Yvonne Rainer, etc. to write about what 'is' and 'is not'.
Despite these experiments which broke down certain barriers between dance
and other art forms and other art forms and life, etc. -- there exists, in
my opinion, today a political, economic and aesthetic need to be able to
articulate what is and what is not dance (naming differences). This is an
analytical, critical and contextualizing practice, which can be done in
writing... or in dancing. I did make explicit reference to artists like
Schlemmer and Grotowski for reasons which still make sense to me, but I can
always use a reminder to become more clear.
