The New Work Network (NWN) acts as an umbrella organisation which brings
together artists, producers, venues, academics and others from the
cutting edges of performance and live practices in the UK, building on
the existing cross-over between a wide variety of practitioners in the
fields of experimental theatre, live art, performance art, new dance
and, increasingly, installation and digital art.
NWN events (funded by the Arts Council of England)
The New Work Network will be launching two events in the Autumn of this
year to build the membership and provide support for artists in this
sector. Another two events will follow in Spring 2000. Each event costs
£7.50 (waged), £5.00 (unwaged or low income). The events are free to
members (with membership card).

18 September 1999 - New Work Network Official Launch
Toynbee Studios, London, 11am-4pm
An exciting launch to New Work Network's programme. This will be an
opportunity to advocate the work of the sector as well as celebrate the
diversity artists involved in making new work.
Manick Govinda, Artists Advisor for Artsadmin, will facilitate the
workshop Writing a Good Proposals for Funders offering advice on what
funders (Arts Council, Regional Arts Boards, Trusts & Foundations) are
looking for in a project proposal. The workshop will also touch on
sponsorship. Excellence, innovation, audience development, marketing
strategies, cultural diversity are buzz words in the fundding game.
What do funders mean by these terms and what exactly are they looking
for? The workshop is for arts practitioners who have had successes,
'rejections' and those who don't know where to begin. Participants are
asked to bring in a past or current funding proposal that was either
successful or otherwise. New artists are asked to bring in a project
outline. Group work is central to the workshop. A willingness to share
experiences of fundraising, information, and give constructive feedback
to each other is essential!
Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 October 1999 - The Artist as Administrator
New Works Festival, Leicester
The New Work Network is delighted to be collaborating with New Works
Festival, Leicester to provide support and advise for emerging artists.
Developed to extend contact between emerging artist and other artists,
arts, promoters, organisations and representatives from venues and
funding bodies, the Artist as Administrator seminars are to be presented
over 2 days. You are able to attend either or both of the events listed
below.
1. Master Class with David Gale
6pm, Saturday 2 October, Crown Building (next to Phoenix Arts)
An opportunity to meet established artist, David Gale,
co-founder of

2. One to One Surgeries
11am - 2pm, Sunday 3 October, Crown Building (next to Phoenix
Arts)
Offering individual advise, leading promoters, artists, commissioners
and arts board representatives will be at hand to answer your questions.
Artists are recommended to bring examples of their work and publicity
information, copy for proposals and anything else that you need to seek
advise on. To reserve a place and to find who the speakers are call New

These seminars are free of charge, but if you wish to see any of the
performances/work presented over the weekend, tickets are priced £5 or
£3.50. New Work Members will have special discount - subject to
confirmation.

February 2000 - Documentation, The Work Station, Sheffield
This is a day split into two parts dealing with documentation and
archiving of new work. In Part 1, examples of good practice in
documentation and basic hands on introductions to key tools and media
(software packages, video formats, CD ROM, internet archiving) are
presented. In Part 2, the archiving of New Work and Live Art, issues
surrounding the mediatisation of transient artforms, copyright and
intellectual property are introduced and discussed.
March 2000 - Calling All Artists! The Green Room, Manchester
This is a regionally focused weekend, targeting artists particularly in
the North West. In the past five years the number of practising
performance and live practitioners in the North West, and very
specifically Manchester has been dwindling, with many artists turning
their attention to digital media. Calling All Artists seeks to flush
out those artists and bring them together for a day of debate -
examining this trend, the underlying reasons and potential strategies
for reinvigorating the live scene in the region, embracing the digital
developments available and exploring potential new collaborations. The
second day invites artists to bring something (a skill, a piece of
equipment, objects or costumes) to a collaborative workshop, culminating
in an informal group showing.
