CROSS FAIR
Dance and New Technologies
Navigating New Constellations

Wednesday 27th October - Sunday 31st October 1999

Venue: Ebertbad Oberhausen, Ebertplatz
Near Essen, Germany

The idea/The bearings
The manner in which we perceive the human body in today's digital age has
been considerably modified and influenced by artists, doctors and
scientists, technologists and architects. The performing arts are now faced
with new explosive questions and opportunities. At this junction, CROSS FAIR
builds a forum for a diverse and stimulating exchange.

The practice/The route
CROSS FAIR 1999 is an inter-disciplinary symposium featuring presentations,
lectures, performances, installations and demonstrations by experts from the
fields of body/movement and technology.

The intersections/The compass
The transdisciplinary use of new technologies in body-based arts and on
stage will be illustrated and examined through past and current reference
and examples of the newest co-operations between dance, sound, image and
technology.

Illuminating perspectives/Places to lay anchor
In an active working atmosphere we will look at physical animation,
virtual presence and environments, liquid architecture and open networking.
Working groups will consider co-authorship methodologies, sense enhancement
techniques, interactive processes and forms and telepresence/webstaging.

The participants/The crew
80 professionally experienced participants will be drawn from the performing
arts, digital arts and technology, fine arts, music and media sectors.
Applications available on request - see information below.

The excursion and a notable night/The islands
The symposium programme will be enhanced by a day trip to local media
organisations in the Ruhr region and a sneak preview of the renovation work
in progress at the new Choreographisches Zentrum NRW.

A special 'club night' featuring 'Cross Fair' artists with specialists from
the London and local clubbing scene will introduce further dimensions of
transdisciplinary activity.

Club Research is developed by London based research and production unit
shinkansen. Movement Jockeys, DJs, dancers, sound creators, lighting
designers and media artists combine skills to collaboratively shape a
special group event that expands existing boundaries between entertainment,
conventional art presentation, education and club culture. Special guests
Wayne McGregor and Hospital Sound from London and David Moufang and
A Certain Frank from Germany

The Brunch
Sunday's Big Brunch is an added opportunity to network and to summarise,
evaluate and consolidate shared experiences and impressions.

Moderation:
Ghislaine Boddington (Artistic Director, shinkansen and Research
Associate Performing Arts/Technology, ResCen, Middlesex Univ., London)
and
Stefan Hilterhaus (Artistic Director Tanzlandschaft Ruhr, Essen)
