On behalf of SAVE AS: DANCE, a four-year partnership developed and
supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts, NIPAD is pleased to announce
grants totaling $400,000 to three institutions whose projects have the
potential to demonstrate the best methods of documenting and preserving
dance, and $100,000 among five individuals from the UCLA National
Dance/Media Fellowship Program to advance their dance documentation
expertise.
The three model projects are:
The Dance Notation Bureau, Inc. ($121,880) to create a technological
interface tool between LabanWriter and Life Forms;
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Dance Collection
($139,060) to mount the Collaborative Editing Project to improve the
dance community's abilities to produce high-quality video documentation;
Drs. A. William Smith and Vera Maletic of the OSU Dance Department
through The Ohio State University Research Foundation ($139,060) to
develop a multimedia database prototype and shell for documenting and
preserving all major components of a dance production.
The 1998 Fellows awarded NIPAD funds are:
Evann Siebens, NY and Mark Eby, CA ($38,024) in a collaboration to
create a feature length documentary video of Sissy Kaio and Hula Halau
'O Lilinoe, a Hawaiian community located in Southern California;
Johannes Holub, NY ($18,586) to videotape the reconstruction and setting
of the ballet Champion by choreographer Sophie Maslow on the Limon Dance
Company and incorporate oral histories and iconography;
Sharon Kinney, CA ($27,550) to create a video documentary of From the
Horse's Mouth, a dance/theater event conceived by James Cunningham and
Tina Croll, involving 24 well-known professional choreographers and
performers representing several generations of outstanding artists;
Laura Margulies, NY ($15,840) to produce and complete a short, animated
film inspired by the Hawaiian dance form, the Hula.
The next application deadline for the 1999 UCLA National Dance/Media
Fellowship Program is May 15, 1998. For additional information about
